language, using the Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar program.

Our Classes
Phonics 1,2,3
This series is appropriate for beginner and early readers, ages 5-7. It teaches all the 42 letter sounds in English. The program’s strength is that it encourages independent reading and writing. It also introduces tricky or high-frequency words that need to be memorized. The child’s ability to blend sounds together when reading is developed. As well, children are encouraged to segment words apart when spelling. The short vowel sounds and the alternative spellings of the long vowel sounds are also introduced.
Grammar 1
Appropriate for beginner to high beginner readers, age 6-8. Reviews the 42 letter sounds, through focused spelling lists. Specifically, alternative spelling of vowels such as ai, ea and consonant blends such as sh, ch etc. are taught. The following parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are introduced. Through this program, the child improves their reading and spelling ability and develops knowledge of the basic sentence structure.
Grammar 2
Appropriate for students who know the 42 letter sounds and are high beginner readers, age 7- 9. They build on their knowledge of grammar and are eventually able to identify irregular verbs, possessive adjectives, conjunctions, and prepositions. By the end of the workbook, they are able to parse sentences. By doing so they easily generate complex sentences when writing. They also learn how to use comparatives and superlative sentence forms. Punctuation is also taught in a fun, repetitive and engaging manner. New spelling rules and patterns are also introduced.
Grammar 3
Appropriate for an intermediate reader who is working on increasing fluency, age 8- 12. The
spelling lists focus on specific spelling rules. At this level, the student is exposed to vocabulary that
is far more complex. It builds a student’s lexical knowledge.
The following concepts are taught:
- Proper Adjectives, nouns acting as adjectives, collective nouns
- Pronouns -possessive/subject and object
- The present participle and continuous tenses
- Paragraphs
- Subject and object in the sentence
- Conjunctions
Grammar 4
Appropriate for an intermediate reader who is working on increasing fluency, age 8- 12.
The spelling lists focus on specific spelling rules. At this level, the student is exposed to vocabulary that is far more complex. It builds a student’s lexical knowledge.
The following concepts are taught:
- Nouns acting as concrete/abstract/possessives
- The present participle as an adjective
- Onomatopoeia
- Clauses/independent clauses
- Review of all the verb tenses and when to use infinitives.
